We're not going to take a nap like Beetle Bailey. We're headed back to August 7, 1978 to see what was playing at the movies in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. "THAT ROCKY GUY IS BACK!" at the Cinema One. F*I*S*T would only play for a week. Stallone's portrait of a union leader in the 1930's was perhaps too ambitious for the public. It's a shame it wasn't a hit.
His name was Johnny Kovak
The Marbro Drive In has one of the biggest hits of the Seventies with Carrie which was getting another run thanks to John Travolta's stardom. Sissy Spacek became a star with this film about a put-upon telekinetic teen which was an instant classic. Autopsy is an Italian Giallo horror thriller about a wave of suicides blamed on sunspots that turn out to be murders. Star Wars would play the at the drive-in in the next week.
if you have a taste for terror you have a date with Carrie
This is where the dead become the living
The Priscilla's Pop comic strip was a little ahead of the game, but the Bad News Bears Meet Jaws III would have probably been better than the 3-D fiasco that was to come. Meanwhile, Jaws 2 was enjoying its 3rd big week at the Martin Twin. You know a movie is hot when "No Passes Accepted" accompanies the ad. Roy Scheider was back as police chief Brody and a new killer shark has come to menace the beach town of Amity again. The tagline "Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water..." was brilliant marketing for a movie that is technically competent, but falls well short of the original.
The Walt Disney movie Hot Lead & Cold Feet was held over for its second week. Don Knotts and Darren McGavin are highlights in this comic western. Jim Dale carries the heavy load as he plays 3 roles. Karen Valentine is cute as Jenny. It was standard mild mannered Disney live action fodder.
the funniest Western ever shot......(I don't think so)
the legend continues
