October 31, 1985 (Revisiting the Past)

I'm going back through what comprised my senior year of high school and first semester of college in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Come along for the ride. New posts every day or so mixed in with other things.

October 31, 1985. Halloween!!! The great Dracula A.D. 1972 was playing on WZTV channel 17. If you meet someone with the surname Alucard you might want to run.

Some Oakland high school students tried to roll Riverdale early in the morning, but Murfreesboro's finest caught them in the act. Four juveniles were charged with trespassing. They claimed they were only trying to "hype" the Oakland vs. Riverdale football game.

The recreation department had a haunted house to benefit the Rutherford County Food Bank at Cox Memorial Gym this Halloween.

October 30, 1985. Dracula week on Channel 17 continues with a Hammer classic. Remember to drink a pint of blood a day and don't miss Taste the Blood of Dracula starring Christopher Lee.

Even better was the airing of the Bad News Bears ripoff film Here Come the Tigers which came on at 11:30 that night. It used to air on HBO often in the late 70's so I saw it many times.

October 29, 1985. It was Dracula week on Channel 17. I miss when the independent stations had theme week movies. Tonight it was Blood of Dracula's Castle starring John Carradine.

October 27, 1985 (Revisiting the Past)

I'm going back through what comprised my senior year of high school and first semester of college in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Come along for the ride. New posts every day or so mixed in with other things.

October 27, 1985. The Kansas City Royals would win game seven of the World Series on this date which was a huge thrill for me since I had been a Royals fan since I got their team card in a pack of 1975 Topps baseball cards. I remember watching the game on television on pins and needles for the first few innings, but soon the Royals were putting runs across and Bret Saberhagen pitched shutout ball a day after becoming a father.

I know it didn't happen on this night, but at some point near this date I went to the Smyrna Jaycee's Haunted House on Almaville Road. This happened in a completely random way. Our next door neighbor on Shacklett Road had a son who was in 8th grade so I would sometimes play basketball with him or throw baseballs with him. A couple of younger boys lived a house over from the 8th grader. They were elementary school age. We would all play baseball across the road in an open field sometimes, especially at this time of year. The younger boys one day near this date had visitors, 2 high school age female cousins (sisters) who joined in while we played baseball. The older girl suggested we go to the haunted house.

So off we went with her younger cousins. I somehow ended up between the sisters who both spent lots of time screaming and hugging me as I chuckled at the horrific haunted house scenes. It was a blast. Halloween was coming on fast so Mercury Plaza in Murfreesboro had you covered with treats.

October 26, 1985 (Revisiting the Past)

I'm going back through what comprised my senior year of high school and first semester of college in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Come along for the ride. New posts every day or so mixed in with other things.

October 26, 1985. It was a Saturday night so I worked the dinner shift at Mazzio's Pizza. When I was done I hung out in the elevated dining area that had the television so I could watch the end of the 6th game of the World Series. My beloved Kansas City Royals had made it to the World Series for the second time in their history and it was looking like it would end up like 1980 with them losing in 6 games. But then came The Call by umpire Don Denkinger and perhaps a little help from the baseball gods too. Pinch hitter Jorge Orta was ruled safe on an infield hit and from that moment on the St. Louis Cardinals lost their minds. They were up 1-0 in the ninth, but after the Orta hit a series of miscues led to Kansas City winning 2-1 setting up a 7th game winer take all game. The Royals would win that one 11-0 as the Cards suffered a total meltdown. Sure, Orta was out, but the Cardinals should have taken care of business instead of blowing up. I'm glad they melted down.

Daylight Savings Time would be over at 2:00AM on Sunday October 27 so that would be one less hour to wait for that blowout in game 7 of the World Series.
