Tuesday Tunes Wally's Favorite Albums of 2025 Edition

Most people come out with their best of lists in December, but I'm not like most people. Here's my countdown from 8 to 1 of my favorite albums of 2025. 

8. Snocaps - Snocaps Katie Crutchfield has a musical reunion with her twin sister Allison with M.J. Lenderman and Brad Cook along for the ride. If you were a fan of Katie and Allison's old band P.S. Eliot this album is a must for you. I'm still waiting for the actual physical LP release which doesn't happen until April, but it was issued to streaming services on Halloween last year. What a surprise treat!

7. Jeff Tweedy - Twilight Override A sprawling 3 LP's or CD's worth of solo material Jeff has been making over the last several years. Much of it is mediative, but never morose. It could have been cut down to a single LP, but I dig the vibe of extra one gets from this album that is a grower and not a shower.

6. Phoebe Rings - Aseurai It may be because I am a product of the Seventies, but while my first big love was of metal and punk (Kiss and Ramones were so formative for me) I'm still a massive mark for well crafted pop and New Zealander's Phoebe Rings is a delight. I got to see them open for The Beths in November and then was lucky enough to meet them and purchase their first full length record Aseurai which they autographed to me. Wish I had bought one of their lazy disco caps when I had the chance.

5. Wednesday - Bleeds You might have thought Wednesday was taking a full fledged turn into country with the initial singe "Elderberry Wine" but Bleeds turned out to be perhaps the most eclectic of the band's career. Karly Hartzman follows her muse wherever it leads. Hardcore screaming punk...you got it. Countrygaze hum and throb...sure thing. Completely strange and weird "Phish Pepsi"...let's go. I'm down for all of it. 

Wednesday - "Townies"

4. Lemonheads - Love Chant 2025 went down as the year of Evan Dando's big comeback. First there was the excellent memoir Rumors of My Demise ghost written by Jim Ruland. It was quite an exhilarating read. The first new album of original Lemonheads material in 19 years came out in October. Love Chant was better than expected, a thrilling return to form for Evan. A successful U.S. tour happened in the fall and winter which was capped off with an appearance on the nationwide The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Then word came that a planed European tour was off. Then the news arrived that Evan was heading into rehab after sending lewd videos to a fan via Twitter/X direct message. It seems like Mr. Dando is really into self sabotage. I hope he finally gets free of the drugs and other demons.

3. Horsegirl - Phonetics On and On Chicago band Horsegirl's first album Versions of Modern Performance  from 2022 was a noisy classic paying homage to Sonic Youth that made me wonder how these young ladies had been exposed to such great music growing up. If you expected more of the same with the new record you might have been disappointed. They flipped the script on the new album. The noise was gone and we get an early Wire type minimalism on what I feel is an even better record.

1. The Beths - Straight Line Was A Lie Oh, how I love The Beths let me count the ways. You might notice that I skipped number 2. That's because I'm only including my Top 8 and since the 2 albums at the top of my list are in a dead heat they both get number 1. The Beths just keep on putting out great records even with front woman Liz Stokes having some health issues and writer's block. Once again, I got to see them play live and meet with after the show. They are one of the greatest groups ever.

1. Liquid Mike - Hell Is An Airport My old pal D.D. Blank got me into Liquid Mike. Feels like the old days when we would always be sharing the gospel of music amongst ourselves. Liquid Mike hail from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and they are pure rock 'n roll! Short sweet songs with astute creative lyrics with raging guitars. If you are seeking some throwback Nineties crunch updated to today you need this album post haste.

Tuesday Tunes is finally back!

It's been awhile I know. Never fear though, Wally's here once more to share what's happening in his music world. The latest thing is the younger folks have really embraced the Nineties. We're talking about grunge, indie/alternative, shoegaze, and jangle pop.....all of which really began in the Eighties, but didn't reach its full flowering until the next decade. The best of the new breed are not slavishly copying their elders, but they are taking the best parts and formulating their own spin which makes my tired old ears grin. 

It's almost all newer stuff this time around. I did decide that 2026 should be the year of metal so I have included one metal adjacent song. Heavy metal and punk rock were what got me through high school (perhaps even saved my life as I went through some dark days) and I will never lose my love of it. 

First up is a very new band from the UK who call themselves Tooth. There are several bands with that moniker so I wish them luck with the name. Their tune "Age of Innocence" has a good beat with some driving bright guitars, fitting for a crew that features one of them pulling out Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque album out of a record store bin. "I wonder if it will always be like this...."

Next up is Seko from South Pasadena, California. "Barrel Connector" is a dream-pop jewel of a song with an incredibly cool video. All 3 of their videos available on YouTube were directed by band member Justice Vaughn Ott who is quite the filmmaker to go along with music creation. Lots of Eighties and Nineties musical reference abound in the videos themselves with Dinosaur Jr., The Swirlies, Ride, and Velocity Girl among others featured in their videos. This band has a bright future!

Joe Glass provides us with a video he co-directed with Owen Vaughan: "Dust on Your Halo/New Pose." He only has 86 subscribers as of the day I am writing this post so do yourself a favor and go, like, and subscribe at this lo-fi Chicago artist's video! It's really fun.

Liquid Mike, hailing from the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan is my favorite band in America. I believe Mike Maple wouldn't mind if I referred to him as an acolyte of Guided by Voices. He's almost as prolific as Robert Pollard and he certainly has a brilliant knack for writing memorable melodies. He had shown that with previous band We Should Be Laughing, but he's shortened the tunes with Liquid Mike (you rarely hit the 3 minute mark), yet packs in even catchier and heavier arrangements. They are coming to Nashville to play Jorts Fest in May. I really hope I get a chance to go see them. I'll have more from them next week as I finally get around to posting my Top Eight Albums from last year.

Here's some new music from an old artist: Steve Diggle's second Buzzcocks album, Attitude Adjustment, post the passing of Pete Shelley came out recently and it's not bad. I was one of those cynical folks thinking he should have stopped using the Buzzcocks name, but I've come around. Give the new album a chance. You might just end up humming the songs all day in your head afterwards which definitely seems apropos considering Diggle was the man who wrote "Harmony in My Head."

Snail Mail is back with a new song and an album to follow in March. I got to see Snail Mail open for Dinosaur Jr. last summer and I was not disappointed. Lindsey Jordan and band were just fabulous. My takeaways that night: boy, is she tiny in person. Brilliant guitarist and ace song writer too. Most surprising to me was how much fun she had on stage. I've been a fan since the algo on YouTube sent "Thinning" my way 9 years ago and I'm so looking forward to the new album Ricochet which comes out March 27th.

Premiering almost at the same time as Snail Mail was a new one from Courtney Barnett called "Site Unseen" featuring another Wally favorite Katie Crutchfield AKA Waxahatchee! It's a teaser for a new album titled Creature of Habit which also comes out on March 27. Courtney is coming to the Ryman on May 5th. I wish I could see her there, but I went to so many concerts last year I'm a bit skint at this point. Maybe I'll get lucky and someone will send a ticket my way haha.

We wrap up this installment of Tuesday tunes with an oldie, but goodie from Blue Öyster Cult. "Burnin' for You" was the lead single off of Fire of Unknown Origin which was released in June 1981. It hit number 1 on the mainstream rock chart and also peaked at number 40 on the pop chart. It contains the immortal lyric "time to play B sides" which was most likely written by rock critic Richard Meltzer who co-wrote the tune with Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. I really dig the song and the video. Come back next week and I'll share songs from my Top 8 albums of 2025.

The Hinds rhythm section may have quit the group but Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote are still making wonderful music. "The Bed, The Room, The Rain and You" is sublime. Synth smacking good!!

The Atlanta, Georgia band Lunar Vacation have a new album titled Everything Matters, Everything's Fire coming out on September 13th. The latest video for the song "Tom" sounds like The Beths to me which means it sounds great.

John Davis was working on a new Superdrag album, but it didn't quite take so the songs have been rescued with the help of Knoxville legend Stewart Pack along with his son Henry. 2 songs have been released from the album called JINX which will be released on September 27th. Both songs are fire as my 19 year old would say. Here's the latest one titled "Take My Brains Out." You can be like me and pre-order the record either from here or here.

Jesse Welles is one prolific dude. He posts a few songs almost every week at YouTube. He's usually outside playing either a Stella or Gibson acoustic with a harmonica hanging around his neck. His group Welles has some sold out shows coming up soon, so I'll be interested to see if he keeps up his current pace. The songs he posts are hit or miss, but boy when they hit it'll make you feel glad you spent your time listening. He recently put up this one on why he doesn't want to shop at Wal-Mart and it hits home for me. I used to work at Wal-Mart way back in the 90's and it was okay. I don't think I would want to work there now. Most of the stores, especially in the small towns, give off crystal meth vibes. I rarely venture inside one these days.

Our first old video is of a group that is still big in Japan. The Southern AOR of The Boys Band featuring B. James Lowry and the grown children of gospel greats Rusty Golden (his father was William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys) and Greg Gordon (his father was in the Chuck Wagon Gang) didn't make too much of a splash in 1982, but this video for the tune "Runner" is certainly interesting.

Rusty Golden recently passed away so perhaps that is why I was drawn to find more videos of his music career. That quest led to the songs he did with his brother Chris as The Goldens. They put out one compact disc titled Rush for Gold in 1990 for SBK/Capitol Records. It's filled with great harmonies. The video for "Take Me Back to the Country" really caught my eye as it was shot in downtown Nashville. That's the downtown I remember riding my skateboard around late at night. I miss it.

There were a bunch of Red Hot compilations in the 90's released under the auspices of the Red Hot organization.  Brooklyn band Babe the Blue Ox contributed the raging "Hazmats" to the Red Hot + Bothered one which was released in 1995.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion were blowing up in the 90's spreading the "fever" all across this great land. I got to see them live a couple of times. 1994 at the now gone Mercury Theater in Knoxville and December 31, 1999 at the now gone 328 Performance Hall in Nashville. They were fantastic for both shows. I hadn't watched the "Flavor" video in years and forgot about Beck and Mike D being in it. There's also the great homage/parody of the Run-DMC "Walk this Way" video too. Aerosmith, who are featured in the Run-DMC video (hmmm I wonder why haha) have announced their retirement in the wake of frontman Steven Tyler's voice troubles which is sad. So let's remember them rocking out with Run-DMC instead. The 1986 cover version was all over the radio in the summer of 1986. I remember hanging out in a Wendy's parking lot with DD Blank while he rapped along with the song. Some younger guys were also there and they quizzed DD on how he knew the words so well. The Aerosmith original didn't exist for them.

Tuesday Tunes returns!

I believe Blogger got whatever bugs out with embedding videos since I've been posting them with the Lucy's Record Shop calendar entries with no issue. So, here's to the return of the semi-regular blast of Tuesday Tunes! These are all music videos I've been enjoying lately. 

I got a notice on Monday that an all new MJ Lenderman album was coming in September and along with the announcement was a brand new song and video in advance. I felt like a kid again hitting that pre-order button at the Bandcamp site for the album Manning Fireworks. I really dig dude's vibe, plus I love his other band, Wednesday, too.

R.E.M. got elected to the Songwriters' Hall of Fame last week and it was special to see the guys all together again sitting down for a long interview with CBS and then seeing snippets of them performing "Losing My Religion" during the induction show. There was a period of time when I had lost my love of R.E.M. which I have written about here before, but I'm a reformed life long fan of the band that was, for me and my friends, The Beatles of the South.

King Krule dropped a new video last week titled "Time for Slurp" and, while I'm not quite sure what slurp is, if Archy Marshall says it's time for it let's go.

Another band I really like is releasing a new album in August. Irish greats Fontaines D.C. have released a couple of videos in advance of this upcoming record which is called Romance. The latest tune, "Favorite", is intercut with videotape of children playing (I assume the children are the Fontaines D.C., but haven't investigated to be sure) with current clips of the band. My children are all, very recently, grown up so the video makes me nostalgic for the days when they were little. Great tune. Looking forward to the album.

Ginger Root is another great artist with an album coming out later this summer. SHINBANGUMI is set to be released September 13th. "Better Than Monday" has a chorus that reminds me of The Beach Boys Love You album which is super nice.

Weird Paul Petroskey has been making music since the 1980's and even put out an album on Homestead Records! You could spend weeks, maybe even years, watching the content he has uploaded to YouTube. There's not only videos of his songs. There's not only old home videos. There's thrift store hauls. Taste testing candy. Short videos of pop culture ephemera. I think the best stuff he ever did was an album called Othello. Othello was the name of the duo of Weird Paul and his sister Linda Petroskey. It's a little bit unhinged and yet, endearing and fun.

The bass player from the New River Boys posted this great video of Red Smith sitting in with his group at the Station Inn doing a fantastic version of "Freeborn Man" back in 1975. Smith was one of the original owners of the place which is now a music institution.

Some Tuesday Tunes. 

I remember seeing The The's video for "This Is the Day" back in the mid-80's and was perplexed that it was not part of the official YouTube channel. Matt Johnson didn't like the way it turned out, but 40 years later he's made peace with it. I'm thrilled about that as I find the video's green screen backgrounds quite charming. "This is the day your life will surely change."

I wanted to use a live video from the Moving Pictures tour of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog," but the jerk who posted it to YouTube won't let it be embedded so here's the studio track instead. The Smashing Pumpkins would use (Billy Corgan himself says they ripped off) the marching band style licks of the Professor (heard approximately at 3:54 of the song) for "Cherub Rock" so listen to that one right after.

It's Tuesday Tunes time. It's a random sampling of what I've been digging lately including a repeat video from my review of The Beths just because Sidney Gish's "Sin Triangle" video is so boss!! Hans Pucket were originally going to play Nashville, but had troubles with their visas, so they had to wait until just this week to arrive to play SXSW. The Lemon Twigs have a new record coming out soon. Collider are a neat band from Denmark who play a kind of proggy shoegaze. Snooper and Tayls are both Nashville groups who are also playing SXSW this year. I've never been a huge Stones fan, but I've lately really been digging their 1967-1968 period.

Thursday Tunes

I haven't posted any music videos in an awhile so let's roll out an edition of Thursday Tunes for all of the music mad droogies out there. The videos are below, but first a few words on each of them. 

Gomez was hyped pretty heavy by some of the customers at Phonoluxe back in the 90's when I worked there. I got their debut and thought it was just okay, but it's really grown on me over the years. Plus the video for "Whippin' Piccadilly" features the great actor Toby Jones. Escalators are scary!!!

Next up is the latest (as of the time of writing) single from Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds "Easy Now" which was filmed in the north London Camden neighborhood. You can use Google Maps to trace actress Milly Alcock's traipse through the area. I really enjoy the vibe of the tune and you can never go wrong as Noel's tunes always have melodies that become pleasantly lodged in your brain. He's coming to play Nashville (really Franklin) in June and I want to go, but the sales are through Ticketmaster so we'll see what transpires. Ticketmaster is the absolute worst. Since I'm on a huge Noel kick, lets dig "Lock All The Doors" which was a tune that was left over from the Oasis era. The video is just rock star kinetics!

De La Soul dominated my car stereo in 1989. 3 Feet and Rising was an instant classic. I was saddened to hear of Trugoy the Dove Plug 2 (David Jolicoeur) passing away on February 12, 2023. And there was a video by them embedded, but it got yanked because Reservoir Media Management thinks the 3 or 4 people that come to this blog don't deserve De La Soul.

So, how about Soul Asylum's cover of the Victoria Williams tune "Summer of Drugs" featuring cameos from the other performers on the benefit album Sweet Release: A Benefit For Victoria Williams. The Stones circa Exile on Main St vibe is top notch. 

Dragon Sound "Friends" is by a fake band from a silly movie Miami Connection which came out in 1987, but that doesn't mean it's bad, unless you mean bad as in good. 80's nostalgia is funny sometimes as this song was also featured in the movie Ping Pong Summer which came out in 2014, but was supposed to take place in 1985. It's an okay movie which features Susan Sarandon as a ping pong coach. She actually is an enthusiast of the game having cofounded a chain of ping pong clubs.

I would sometimes buy records just because of the band name or the label the album was on. Masters of Reality's self titled release on Def American checked both boxes for me back in 1989. I was not disappointed as it rocked with a cool swagger. 

Last, but not least is "What Is Life" by the great George Harrison. The video is like a sweet hug from someone you love.

It's Tuesday again so here's some tunes I've been enjoying lately. 

Hans Pucket have brought out their second video for their forthcoming No Drama album. This time we get the title track from these New Zealand wunderkinds. I'm looking forward to getting this on vinyl when it's released on November 4.

Maybe, just maybe, if I am super lucky Hans Pucket will tour with The Beths next year here in the USA. That would be cool since I have tickets to see The Beths next year in Nashville at the Brooklyn Bowl. The Beths latest video release is for the tune "Knees Deep" and it is as incredible as everything they have been putting out lately. Their new full length album Expert In A Dying Field will hit the shelves around September 16.

My 17 year old son was gifted a free Damned and Blondie show at the Grand Ole Opry House a few weeks ago. He said Debbie Harry had lots of energy for a lady in her 70's. Blondie has always been a favorite of mine and the whole family.

I don't know how I didn't hear the Beach Fossils before stumbling across them on Bandcamp the other day, but I dig what I hear and, of course, if you put skateboarding in a video I will always pay attention.

I'm not a massive fan of artists going back and tweaking their old music, but this Dexy's release might be an exception for me. Kevin Rowland and company are such underrated artists. A triple CD comes out on October 14th. I haven't hit that pre-order button yet, but I'm sure I will soon.

Let's finish off this post with a clip and a tune from one of my childhood favorite films: Trocadero Bleu Citron. I recently saw it again for the first time in decades and although it was all in French with no English subtitles I believe I still got it. It aired on HBO often when we first got cable TV in 1979 and it was a favorite with its skating scenes.

Tuesday Tunes

It's another dose of what I've been enjoying music wise. First up is the ever awesome Hans Pucket who've released "My Brain is A Vacant Space" off their upcoming album No Drama which was produced by The Beths's Jonathan Pearce. It won't come out until November which is a long time to wait, but I've already pre-ordered the vinyl.

Fellow New Zealand band The Beths have a new album called Expert In A Dying Field coming out in September. I've pre-ordered that one also. They've released a couple of great tracks from it including the title cut. Beth Stokes just stays on a roll with her brilliant songs. Both Hans Pucket and The Beths are on Carpark Records. There are lots of other great artists on their roster so check out the catalog.

YouTube recommended this cat to me the other day. I discovered he was from Philly on Bandcamp. I would guess he knows Kurt Vile. Maybe. This tune is short and chill.

Did you know I was once an audience member of a big time rock and roll video? Well, I was. I don't think the song did too well as Ratt had peaked and were on that downhill slide, but it's still pretty cool. I had no intention of going to the concert at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium as I was never a huge fan of them, but Queensrÿche were opening and my friend JD was a bonafide Queensrÿche fan club member. So I went, heck JD may have even bought my ticket. My other friend JR (another J name!) who was a big metalhead came with us. We got to hang out by the Queensrÿche bus before the show. I got Chris DeGarmo's autograph. They were great live and then Ratt came on and let us know they'd be filming a video that night so we would get to hear "Slip of the Lip" twice that night as they got the video coverage they needed. I ended up having a great time that night. Note: the street and hotel scenes were filmed in New Orleans.

The latest Lucy's Record Shop podcast featured Corey Kittrell who was (and still is) a cool dude who had a great zine back in the day called My God Shaves. Just hearing his voice again was a thrill. This awesome Tsunami song "Enter Misguided" was heard in the podcast and that reminded me of those 90's days when I used to correspond with Jenny Toomey.

Last, but not least I'm enjoying the latest book from Jarvis Cocker. It's called Good Pop Bad Pop and it features lots of photos of items from his past along with his ever brilliant words explaining why those pieces of pop culture debris made him who he is today. It's very entertaining.
