Lucy's Record Shop Calendar February 1993 - May 1993

The sheer quantity of shows and artists that played Lucy's Record Shop is incredible. It was foolhardy for me to think I could deep dive into each month. I spiraled into depression after the post chronicling January 1993 and came close to throwing in the towel completely. So I'm compromising instead, with fewer links and YouTube videos. This time around we'll go through 4 months at once. Disclaimer: this information is compiled via all sorts of sources, but sometimes bands cancelled at the last minute. This is a guide of who was supposed to play and when. It most likely happened, but there is a chance it didn't.

There were 4 big Migraine Matinees in February with punk, metal, and thrash carrying the load. My favorites would be Spider Virus and Tullahoma band Face Down. The other side of the spectrum brings us future Lambchop who were still going by the name Imposter Child.

Michigan native Wally Pleasant makes the first of 8 Lucy's appearances in March. His Songs About Stuff album from 1992 had garnered quite a bit of airplay on Vanderbilt's WRVU 91 Rock with the song "Bad Haircut" probably being the most popular tune. There was a time when I really liked his humorous folksy tunes, but they did wear thin after a while. It was neat to meet him with Mary Mancini introducing us to each other, "Wally, meet Wally." I have the utmost respect and admiration for him as he stayed completely independent with his own Miranda Records imprint.

Lethargic documented their March 14, 1993 appearance. They claim it's the worst show they ever played. You can be the judge of that. Check out their videos from that day.

It's all Migraine Matinees in April 1993. I get a real treat this month with Face Down, my local favorites Jack, and Chicago band 8 Bark all on one bill! The April 25th afternoon blast is pure fire with The Grifters and Babe the Blue Ox topping off the festivities.

May of 1993 is packed with several bands playing Lucy's for their second or even third time. I'm still wondering how I missed the May 7th Today is the Day and Surgery concert. That would have been a killer one. I would start putting out my handful of issues of Anti-Society soon and I would get a fan letter from the young lady that led the band Helo Kitty who played a Migraine Matinee with Brainiac this month. That's all for this look back at Lucy's Record Shop. I'll be back in a month or so with more. Sludge metal North Carolina boys Buzzoven, later written as Buzzov*en can play us out.
