Lucy's Record Shop June 1993 - August 1993

We're up to post number 4 in my quest to share what artists played Lucy's Record Shop in Nashville, Tennessee back in the last century. It was a grand time to be alive filled with rock and roll all ages shows! Now for the customary disclaimer. These listings were compiled from a variety of sources and there is always the possibility that bands cancelled and substitutions were made.

June 1993 features a legendary show as Jawbreaker comes to town with locals Teen Idols opening. I had bought the Jawbreaker debut full length Unfun a few years before either at Phonoluxe or perhaps on a record buying trip to Atlanta. I haven't found any video of Jawbreaker at Lucy's, but there's video of them performing just 3 days later in Arkansas. There was lots of punk rock and thrash on hand this month and a show listed on June 24th as The Beast. If anyone out there in TV Land knows anything about that particular bill please leave a comment. I'm very curious about that one.

There is also the first official appearance of Kurt Wagner's Lambchop on June 30. They had been appearing as Posterchild and Imposterchild before. I presume they opened for Washington D.C. band Unrest who were critical darlings of the indie scene at the time. I really liked the aesthetic of the Teen-Beat record label releases, but their music never connected with me in a major way. I think they are a little bit forgotten these days, but perhaps I'm wrong. Unrest and Lambchop had played together at Lucy's before on November 16, 1992.

30-Jun-93 Lambchop, Unrest (time and entrance fee unknown)

I presume the Sponge listed on July 1, 1993 is the same Sponge from Michigan that achieved a fair amount of success with their 1994 debut record Rotting PiƱata. The songs "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)" were MTV staples.

My good friend D.D. Blank was home for the summer or perhaps the weekend and we went together to the see the July 3rd show with Fun Girls from Mt. Pilot, Uncle Daddy, Voodoo Glow Skulls, and The Fixtures. It was the first of 24 listed appearances by the Fun Girls which is second only to Lambchop's 33 shows at Lucy's counting their previous band names. Which has always perplexed me since there were Lambchop cassettes released beginning in 1992. A band of many names, yet I still don't get the appeal.

This is an incredible month with Half Japanese playing on July 5th. The July 11th Migraine Matinee is one for the ages with the Needles, Spoon Benders, Mouse Trap, and Brainiac cranking out fuzzbot laced tunes. My friends in Jack headline the next week's matinee. I must have missed that show as I don't remember what Melvin's Headtrip or Back of Dave sounded like. Blatherskite was a thrash/grindcore metal band from Indiana with Cookie Monster vocals. My pick for best concert of the month would be on July 25th. Chicago's 8 Bark are underrated legends and Man or Astro-Man? were always an experience live. My own group would end up opening for them the next year. Lambchop plays another show to close out the month opening for Vic Chesnutt.

Voodoo Glow Skulls Live at Hong Kong Cafe 1993

I liked Lambchop when they worked with Shari Lewis the best. :)

The real Lambchop in 1993

Don't worry if you're a fan of Kurt Wagner's Lambchop. I will eventually post a tune or two from them in a future post.

August 1993 was a very loud month based on this calendar. There's a brief bit of respite on a few shows for those who prefer the softer alternative sounds. I assume Phooey on August 1st was the punk pop act from Ventura, California. El Smasho! was a punk band from Michigan. Dogs on Ice were from Tampa, Florida.

Collin Wade Monk is back again with M.E.E.K. by his side. If anyone knows who or what that was please reply in the comments. Smokin' Dave and the Premo Dopes recorded one of my favorite tunes from the mid-80's with the scathing "Ethiopian Jokes."

Copout comes to town on August 8th. The Memphis hardcore punk band's self-titled record released on Team Murder USA Records can be had for a mere $100 on Discogs currently. They would do a split 7 inch with Face Down the next year.

The very strange Eeyore Ass Guzzler came to town and Helo Kitty opens. A girl named Leslie Q. nicknamed Snack (with a backwards K) was in Helo Kitty. She once sent me a postcard praising my fanzine Anti-Society and even asked if I wanted to form a second group with her. Just think.....if I'd taken her offer perhaps my life might be totally different now. Wild. Eeyore Ass Guzzler was a really weird outfit that inspired this little bit on Reddit. I suppose it was an offshoot of the insanely prolific Caroliner Rainbow out of Berkeley, California.

I wonder if the Go-Devils who played with Spider Virus on August 19th were the Japanese all girl garage band? Spider Virus is only listed as playing Lucy's 3 times which seems way too few to me. Idaho Beach House was a pretty big Middle Tennessee band who had played Lucy's before. They created a Facebook page and their own website, but the website domain is lapsed and the Facebook group seems like a zombie page. A review in the House O' Pain magazine said they sounded like a less pretentious Smashing Pumpkins. I shared a link to one of their songs before in my post on the January '93 Lucy's calendar.

August 26 would see Rain Like the Sound of Trains play Lucy's with the Fun Girls from Mt. Pilot. The band name was probably too long, but Washington D.C's Rain Like the Sound of Trains was composed of former members of Verbal Assault, Soulside, and Beefeater. Fingerhut makes their Lucy's debut of August 29th. They would play Lucy's 9 times with the name sometimes listed with one "t" at the end and sometime listed with 2 "t's" instead. The headliner for this matinee was the math rock band named Bert from Montgomery, Alabama. This band played Lucy's 9 times and would end up cutting some tracks with the late great Steve Albini himself. They were also featured in episode 9 of the Lucy's Record Shop podcasts. You can get their tunes from Bandcamp including their self released tape called Slop from 1993.
