Cinema One April 1974 - June 1974

Murfreesboro had a drive-in and a couple of movie theatre's in 1971. There was the Marbro Drive-In, the Martin Theatre at Jackson Heights Shopping Center, and the venerable Princess Theatre just off the square. January 1972 brought news of the permanent closure of the Princess Theatre. I may one day get around to chronicling what played at the Princess. During its last few years it had shown more offbeat films along with X rated soft core sex films. I assume the Martin Theatre chain was trying to appeal to nearby M.T.S.U. students. They were also still running children's matinees before it closed for good.

The closure of the Princess left a void in town. While Martin claimed they were going to open a new "show palace" those plans either fell through or they just dragged their feet. It would take over 2 years before a new movie theatre opened and it would be opened by local folks. Read all about its upcoming opening below. One of the best things about Cinema One was it had rocking chair seats.

The Three Musketeers trailer

It was quite the big deal for a new movie theatre to open in Murfreesboro.

Cinema One was smart to advertise in M.T.S.U.'s student newspaper Sidelines. The theatre was perfectly located to capture the youth market that used to go to the edgier films at the Princess.

It didn't take long for the smart owners of Cinema One to add "Rocking Chair Theatre" to the movie ads in the Daily News Journal

I used to think the first movie I can remember seeing in a movie theatre was "Where the Red Fern Grows", but after doing so much research on what played in Murfreesboro it turns out I saw "Sounder" at the Cinema One was actually my oldest big screen memory. I went to see it on a school field trip. I was in the 1st grade and I remember how big the Cinema One was and how cool it was to rock our seats. The movie was great but gut wrenching. So, my first films in a theatre were both dog movies that left one sad.
