Monday music videos probably only viewable in web version only. I had some bullshit washed up boomer musician talking shit about me today. So today's music goes out to him. You know the type - Beatles fanatic who thinks music began and ended with them. I think he got upset that I said I like many other groups better than them. Don't get me wrong, I do like the Beatles and they were massively influential, but boomer Beatles defenders are the worst sort. I'll stop griping and just post some music that I've been digging the last few weeks like I always do. Heck, there's some great boomer musicians in this post.

Yeah, I know I should be posting more Martin listings from the past, but I've been super busy with a job rotation and just my usual up and down emotional rollercoaster of life. I did go to my first show since Covid-19 hit. I saw Kurt Vile and the Violators at the Ryman with Chastity Belt opening. I had heard Chastity Belt before, but seeing and hearing them live was just so wonderful I bought all the records they had for sale at the merchandise table. Kurt was amazing as always. I'm loving his new album "watch my moves" which is out on Verve Records. I pre-ordered it and got the neat signed lithograph with it. There was a moment during his concert at the Ryman when I gazed over at my daughter who accompanied me to the show and I felt like there was nowhere else in the world I would want to be at that time. I just dig the mesmerizing slacker rock vibe he consistently brings. I do so hope his guitar tech gets paid well since Kurt changes his axe almost between every song. I highly recommend seeing him live.

Chastity Belt were rocking in a indie jangle pop/shoegaze 90's sort of style, but they really impressed me when the singer/guitarist Julia Shapiro swapped with the drummer Gretchen Grimm for several songs. It reminded me of seeing the Smithereens swap instruments when I would see them perform. Just like with Kurt Vile I hope to see Chastity Belt every time they make it to Nashville. Guitarist/singer Lydia Lund rocked out "Fear" at the end of the show while my daughter thought the always bouncing bassist Annie Truscott looked like Ren Stevens. As for the sparse crowd pictured: they were the opening band so lots of people always file in late plus there was a Nine Inch Nails concert just outside of Franklin and Jack White was playing Ascend Amphitheater too. Couple that with Covid fears and the fact that the Kurt Vile concert was streamed and the turnout was light. It didn't fill up much even when Kurt came on. Too bad for those who missed the evening. It was quite magical.

Another huge highlight of the Kurt Vile concert was his cover of the Silver Jews's "Punks in the Beerlight" which was totally ripping with a smoke machine cranking out over the front rows while the stage lights strobed. This led me to revisiting the late David Cloud Berman's work with the Silver Jews and his last Purple Mountains project. It's a shame he's gone, but his work will live on. 

Random Rules

Sharp eyed viewers will have noticed that the Chastity Belt video for "Different Now" was a great homage to the video for Temple of the Dog's "Hunger Strike" so let's take a look at one of my favorites from the grunge era. That moment at around 2:28 when the vocals drop out and the chords change and later at 3:23 when Chris Cornell comes back in yowling is perfection. Cornell is another one who is greatly missed.

One of the albums I'm looking forward to is by the Chicago band Horsegirl who I discovered via Bandcamp some time ago. They came out with an all new video and tune today. This song has a Swirlies vibe to it which is just cool. I keep wondering how these younger folks are channeling the 90's indie sound so well, but I really shouldn't be surprised as there were always lots of bands in the 80's that sounded like 60's bands. Anyways, dig "Dirtbag Transformation (Still Dirty" from Horsegirl. I already love the ooh's!

Finally here's a below the fold bonus. I may be old, fat, and goofy (and I am working on changing fat back to skinny...I do that every few years for kicks), but I am still writing tunes and shoving them out on to YouTube where they rarely get seen. So let's get one rarely seen here too. It does have a line which goes "K.V. in the AM and CB in the night, hey good buddies do you have your ears on, are you picking me up tonight?" where the K.V. is Kurt Vile. CB is another pop culture reference which was inspired by the movie Out of the Blue

Lucy's Record Shop podcast!

Mary Mancini has started a podcast all about her days running Lucy's Record Shop. I highly recommend you give it a listen. Who knows....maybe I will be a guest one day. I have written a few posts over the years that mentioned Lucy's or featured old flyers for shows there. I might take some time soon to write a full blown piece on a place that was a huge part of my life during the 1990's. Meanwhile, you can read Jim Ridley's Nashville Scene article written upon the news that Lucy's was closing. The first paragraph is writing of the finest type.

The Martin Theatre had its grand opening on March 16, 1967. You can read all about that here. The first film to play was the Walt Disney film Follow Me, Boys! starring Fred MacMurray. Next up would be the cool James Coburn spy sequel In Like Flint which is a great one.

Martin Theatre Grand Opening March 16, 1967

The time had finally come on March 16, 1967 for the modern and new Martin Theatre to open in Jackson Heights Plaza. I'm going to go through every film that played at this location until the Martin name disappeared for good in 1988 and the best place to start is at the beginning. As always if there are videos you have to view the "web version" of the blog or you won't see them.

A rock band from Nashville named the Rogues is brought in to play before the movie begins. I couldn't find out much about them other than that they regularly played Central State Hospital.

I hope you enjoyed that digression with The Rogues. It was a cold night on March 16, 1967, but I'm sure everybody felt warmly excited for the new theatre opening. Orchids were to be handed out to the first 200 ladies attending that night. The movie that would play was Walt Disney's Follow Me, Boys! which starred Fred MacMurray, Vera Miles, and Kurt Russell among many others. MacMurray plays a man who settles in a small town and, instead of becoming a lawyer, he becomes a scout master.

If you wondered what businesses were in Jackson Heights Plaza when the Martin opened, wonder no more. It may just be me, but I love these welcome ads along with the construction company ones.

Follow Me, Boys! would be the first of many movies to play the Martin at Jackson Heights Plaza. Starting next week I will begin posting the ads for every film that played the Martin, the Martin Twin, the Martin Four, and Martin Six until it loses the name Martin completely several years after being bought out by Carmike. The Martin chain itself, before Carmike, became part of a financial company named Fuqua and you will notice the Fuqua name on ads too. The location is still going even though Carmike shut it down in the year 2000. It was sold and reopened as the Premiere 6 in 2001. Which I think is pretty cool.

March 15, 1967 The Anticipation of the Martin Theatre Grand Opening

I was a mere baby in Memphis, Tennessee at this point of time, but I would get to know the Martin Theatre years later after it became the Martin Twin Theatre. If you happen to be old enough to remember and, most likely, lived in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, plus loved going to see movies, March 15, 1967 was a date you might remember. It was the day before the grand opening of the Martin Theatre. The first 200 ladies to arrive would get a free orchid. There would be Hollywood style spotlights and a band playing outside. It was going to be an epic night, plus you'd even get to see Fred MacMurray's latest Disney hit Follow Me, Boys! Stay tuned for more on this momentous even tomorrow as I celebrate the 55th Anniversary of the Martin Theatre then.

 July 26, 1965 saw the first announcement that Martin, which owned and operated the Princess Theatre, would be bringing 2 more theatre's to Murfreesboro. These would be the Marbro Drive_In and a single theatre whose location was to be determined. The Marbro Drive-In would open on July 22, 1966.  

December 14, 1965 would see that the Martin chain of movie theatre's had found their location for the 2nd new theatre. It would be coming soon to the Jackson Heights Plaza Shopping Center. How soon, well it will be over a year before the Martin Theatre opens, but I'll be covering that here on Wednesday of this week and I will also start listing every film to play the theatre all the way up to 1988.

Upcoming Posts

I survived Covid-19. It wasn't that bad, but I was lucky as it could have been. I've known some people that had it last year that passed away from it and I know a friend right now who has been hit really hard with the current variant. I'm hoping we are in the endemic stage and things will get back to what counts as normal. Of course, there could be war in the Ukraine any second so who knows. I'll muddle along like I usually do. 

I've been finally converting my pdf files of all of the movie ads for the Martin Theatre that was a long time staple of movie going in Murfreesboro, Tennessee from 1967 on. The theatre is still in Jackson Heights Plaza and is known as the Premiere Six. I was going to start posting all of the old ads sooner, but waiting until next month will allow me to coincide with the 55th anniversary of the theatre opening. I missed a few Marbro Drive-In midnight movie showings when I tried to list everything that played there so I've been extra diligent this time around with the Martin listings. I will go back and update the Marbro ones I missed when I get the chance. I'm still pondering on how many film ads to share per post, but I'll figure that out soon. Eventually the Cinema One/Twin listings will accompany the Martin ones once we get to 1974.

Update: Here's the plan on the movie postings to come. I will probably post 2-3 times a week on the Martin Theatre covering a month worth of movies at a time. Then, once I get to 1974, I will start making separate posts for the Cinema One as it opened in April. This whole process will take around a year and a half for each theatre and since there will be many years concurrent I suppose it will take up to 2 years to finish this project. 

Sick

I am sick. Chills and sweats. Headache from hell. I really don't like being sick. This is only the 2nd time since the pandemic began that I have been sick so I am counting my blessings. Still, right now I'm out of it.

Random Thoughts

A realtor came to my door yesterday and asked if I wanted to sell my home as there was no inventory available. Hmmm.....sell you my home and then not be able to find another one. Sounds great, right? 

I saw a meme the other day that showed the world has gone to crap since David Bowie died. It's not that farfetched a theory. 

Principles these days: Neil Young wanted Spotify to remove his songs from their streaming service because of Joe Rogan. I guess it was that Neil disagrees with Joe on the handling of the pandemic. Ok, whatever, it's not like Neil makes money from Spotify. Here's my view: I don't like Joe Rogan. I don't find him funny or informative. I do like Neil Young's music, but don't usually pay much attention to him otherwise. So, sticking to my principles, I will continue to not listen to Joe Rogan and continue to listen to Neil Young, but not on Spotify since I don't use it anyway. I'm taking a stand!! 

Getting back to the idea of selling my home....I think I would do it if I knew I had a nice place in Florida to live, but then I think about alligators and mosquitos the size of 747's and I guess I'll stay where I'm at for now. 

I watched an episode of What's Happening for the first time in many years yesterday. It holds up well.

Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's Unburst

I bought a Les Paul. It’s amazing. I blew my son's mind when I told him I remembered the first time I heard someone in person play an electric guitar. I was 4 years old and it was when we lived in Mississippi. The teenage son of my babysitter plugged his guitar into their stereo and played. I guess I’ve never been the same since. I have been playing guitars since the late 80's. I figured out that "Blitzkrieg Bop" started in A so I learned to tune to that song. I would play barre chords to the entire self titled Ramones debut. I've had a few guitars over the years, but none of this caliber. This is a guitar that I can leave to my children to fight over. 

Another Birthday is almost upon me...

Sorry for the lack of postings, but I've been busy working. One must earn money to pay for the insane inflation that is reminding me of my youth in the Seventies. Thanksgiving is coming up which should provide some respite from the same old routine, but my birthday hits right afterwards and I'm at the age in which a birthday is just another reminder of mortality and the great beyond. Blah! If anyone wants to get me the Kiss 45th Anniversary Super Deluxe edition it might make for a happier birthday. Haha! 

I will probably start working on my Martin Theatre and Cinema movie ads from their beginnings until they either changed names or closed permanently. I have so many ads to pull screenshots from so patience. I also figured out I missed many special midnight movies that played the Marbro so I need to update those posts. That's all for now.
