Funky Tunes

There are two, count 'em two, Film Flashbacks coming tomorrow. One will post in the morning and the second in the afternoon. It will be a double feature day. Before then how about a few funk songs. First up is the incredible Roger Troutman and Zapp. I love the talk box and I really love this video. It's pretty much just a performance one, but sometimes that's all you need. Definitely the sort of tune that would get a skating rink or club going.

How about some Bar-Kays with "Shine." Earth, Wind & Fire's influence is all over this one, but that's okay. I don't mind a little disco in my funk. The song is on their Light of Life album recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis. Of course, the Bar-Kays are from Memphis.

Do you want to hear the Earth, Wind & Fire influence? Sure you do. "On Your Face" is the tune "Shine" has to be derived from. Maurice White's band were monumental in the 70's and 80's.

Let's finish it up with the immortal Lakeside. They were also from Ohio like Roger and Zapp. The great Solar label put this out in 1980 and I remember catching this video on television and loving that bass line and the pirate outfits. Do you want to go to the land of funk?
