Sunday Showcase Review November 21, 1982

This week's Sunday Showcase review takes us to the November 21, 1982 edition. We're just going to go straight through this issue with all of the concerts and things which interested me which might interest you too. Perhaps you went to some of the concerts below.

First up is Joe Jackson who was playing Andrew Jackson Hall at TPAC on November 23, 1982. I would have liked to have seen this one as I really enjoyed the singles released from his Night and Day album. "Breaking Us in Two" and "Steppin' Out" were both great tunes. The Look Sharp era Joe Jackson is my favorite though.

"Steppin' Out" live 1982

George Thorogood and the Destroyers would be playing the National Guard Armory on December 5, 1982. I remember "Bad to the Bone" being all over the radio in 1982, but it didn't even make the pop charts. I pretty much only listened to KDF at this point.

Judas Priest were coming to rock Nashville on the very next night. They would be playing at Municipal with Uriah Heep opening. Priest had hit the big time with their Screaming For Vengeance album.

Uriah Heep "That's The Way It Is"

"Metal Gods" live in Memphis 1982

"You've Got Another Thing Comin'" live in Memphis 1982

This week's Sunday Showcase review is brought to you by Office Machines, Inc. since they help me with all the Atari Service I need.

Luther Vandross (who sang backup for some top notch David Bowie tracks plus co-wrote "Fascination") is coming to the Grand Ole Opry House with Gong Show winner Cheryl Lynn opening. Luther had produced her latest album Instant Love. The "Velvet Voice" was really great.

"I Just Wanna Be Your Fantasy" 1982

"Bad Boy Having A Party" 1982

Since I'm just going through this issue in order the Top Ten isn't left to the last per usual. Olivia Newton-John sits atop the chart with "Heart Attack." I was not paying as much attention to pop radio at this point, but I instantly remember all of the songs listed except for that one and "Truly" by Lionel Richie is a little hazy in my memory. I would sometimes go roller skating at Hot Wheels on Friday nights and "Gloria" by Laura Branigan got heavy play at the skating rink. Men At Work and John Cougar were both blowing up. It's not a bad Top Ten at all.

Ok. I do remember this tune now.

go away don't come round here no more

Laura Branigan "Gloria"

Cantrell's has a busy slate of local groups along with The Greg Hill Band from LA. The White Animals are having a record party which I assumed was a celebration of the release of their album Lost Weekend, but it had come out much earlier in the year so I don't know what their record party was about. The Piggys are playing on Friday and Saturday. They were a very popular Nashville band for several years.

Piggys "Don't Listen Suzanne" such a great tune!!!

"Constant Attention"

The second half of this Sunday Showcase review is proudly brought to you by M.C. Radford at the Hypnosis Center. Not only can this M.C. drop a rhyme, he can also hypnotize.

REO Speedwagon would be playing Municipal Auditorium on November 24, 1982 with Survivor opening. I went back through several weeks worth of Showcase's to see if I could find an ad promoting the show then did a general search through all 1982 issues of The Tennessean and found none. When you're so hot your shows sell out you don't need no stinking advertisements.

"Eye of the Tiger"

Since it's close to Thanksgiving how about some "Turkey Trot"

Barry Manilow was coming to play at M.T.S.U.'s Murphy Center. There was an even bigger ad a few weeks prior that touted this show would be in the round.

"If I Should Love Again" live 1982 Pittsburgh

BONUS STUFF

There's a really funny Yacht Rock episode about "I Keep Forgettin'" not making it to at least number 2 when it was originally released. Well, it did make it to number 1 in Nashville. We know what's awesome here.

The November 14, 1982 Sunday Showcase has this cool ad for the upcoming Atlanta appearance by Public Image Ltd. (PiL) at the Agora. You could get special rates at the Hotel York.

A news story on PiL playing Toronto 1982

PiL may not have played Nashville, but the fearsome post punk blues band the Gun Club had played Spanky's on November 1, 1982 with local band Young Grey Ruins opening.

Gun Club "Fire Spirt" live 1982

Here's another upcoming show that didn't get an ad in the November 21, 1982 Sunday Showcase so I went back a week to find this one for Billy Squier. He would be playing Municipal on November 30th with Nazareth opening. I could have sworn Def Leppard was the opening act through the end of 1982. I was a huge Billy Squier fan back then and still am today.

"Lonely Is The Night" live 1981
