Sunday Showcase July 15, 1984

Our trip back in time this Sunday is to 1984 which came short of Orwell's prediction 30 some odd years. Ed Bruce, LeVar Burton, and Nashville's own White Animals grace the cover of the Sunday Showcase of the Tennessean. My love for the White Animals music and style is well known having done a fanboy archive post on the band back in 2006. Here's a link if you want to learn more about the White Animals: https://wallybangs.blogspot.com/2006/12/from-fanboy-archives-white-animals.html. I may revisit it sometime and make it even more in-depth. They were going to headline a "Summer Teen Party" at the National Guard Armory that upcoming Saturday with the Automatics and breakdancing squad the Klassy Kats who opened lots of shows in 1984 and 1985 for various rock acts with the most well know being Cheap Trick at Opryland later that summer.

I have looked for video footage of the Klassy Kats but haven't found any yet. They were the guests of a WSM special called Silhouettes hosted by Angela Radcliffe and Ernie Allen. It aired on July 15, 1984 at 7:30 in the morning.

I don't think I ever visited the Cat's Records on Nolensville Road. Simmonz would have been a fun band to see back then.

The Top Ten is packed with 80's classics. Prince's "When Doves Cry" is my favorite.

why do we scream at each other

the drumbeat sound of time

reading murder books and tryin' to stay hip

I bought so many Columbia related releases with that red typeface back in the day at all of the stores listed in the ad plus at many department stores.

The X inspired country punk band Blood On The Saddle were coming to play Cantrell's.

Nashville's wild man Joe Savage was a mainstay at Ziggy's. I wonder what the free gift was on Ladies Night?

Hank Williams Jr. was coming to McMinnville on August 3rd. Bocephus was a massive star back in those days.

The Happy Together Tour is still happening with The Turtles and various other bands to this day, If not for the Covid-19 pandemic you could have seen them again this summer. Flo & Eddie are definitely not work shirkers.

Finally we get to the most important episode of Happy Days ever: would Chachi leave to tour with the Beach Boys? The episode is titled "Good News, Bad News" and oddly it aired along with 4 other episodes after the series finale. It would be the second to last first run episode with "Fonzie's Spots" being the last one. The good news was the offer to Chachi, but the bad news...spoiler alert...was that he was diagnosed with diabetes and had to turn the chance down.

That's all for this week. Come back next time when I look at a Sunday Showcase from 1983.
