Sunday Showcase July 2, 1978

The Sunday Showcase cover for July 2, 1978 is filled with television superstars. There are stories on Ed Asner, Lee Majors, Ricardo Montalban, and Herve Villechaize. A musical superstar had an upcoming concert which is advertised within among lots of other music items.

The Boss was coming to town touring behind the release of Darkness On The Edge Of Town. I had hoped to find a review of the show, but there was not one written. There was a note in the Friday paper before the concert about all seats being in front of the stage and how there was no opening act.

If I could go back in time I would actually want to see this concert instead. The Commodores were headlining at Municipal with A Taste Of Honey and Con Funk Shun.

A 3 day festival of country music was happening down in Columbia. Just check out all the performers.

The Exit/In was booked solid with excellent musicians. The Sunday Showcase got the spelling of the divine Flora Purim's name right this time too.

Music was such a hot commodity back in the Seventies that companies would buy whole page advertisements like this one promoting Warner-Elektra-Atlantic and Port O'Call Records.

There was once a time when Journey was just an opening act.

I don't know if I would have wanted to see Foreigner or go see Silver at the Ramada Inn South. Just dig those threads. I guess they didn't want to get overshadowed by all of the "foxy lady contest" ladies. A $100 prize was pretty good money back in 1978.

"Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty sits atop the Top 10 Records for this week. My memory is this song being a huge smash hit and it was indeed a hit, but it only hit number 26 on the Billboard Year End 1978 chart. A song percolating underneath it would claim the number 1 song of the year and that tune is Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing." My favorites on the list would be Pablo Cruise and Abba.

I'll wrap up this very succinct Sunday Showcase review with a little television ad for Channel 5's afternoon line-up along with a quick peek at the TV listings for the afternoon. There's great viewing on every station, perfect to drink a Coke and eat a honeybun while laying on the couch or floor.
