Monday Music

If you are viewing the mobile version of this page you won't see the videos and miss out on the fun. Switch to the web version for maximum voltage. Here's some fun music I've been watching on YouTube lately.

I always have found this video amusing and the song pure pop fun.

the obsession with 80's culture is interesting to one who lived through it as a teenager

And now for a complete 180 degree turn

buy or die (the irony of this being on YouTube is not lost on me)

Method of Destruction f**kers!

DRI getting serious

Bad attitude but "be yourself" just enough like someone else

Kevin DuBrow was a big mouth, but I'm sure he was more influential than people realize.

Sunday Showcase Review November 27, 1977

You may find yourself wondering where did 2020 go, but I'm still trying to figure out how 1977 went by so fast. Let's look at just items from the November 27, 1977 Sunday Showcase. It's probably just me, but I really think Beverly Sills looks a lot like Charlotte Rae in the cover photo.

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band were coming to play Municipal Auditorium on December 14, 1977. I think I was overexposed to Seger's music as KDF played it a lot back in the 80's, but I did like him. He's probably on the Mt. Rushmore of American rock songwriters of the 70's/80's along with Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Tom Petty. Meat and potatoes rock and roll. Nick Jameson who had sung with Paul Butterfield, played bass and produced Foghat's "Fool For The City" album (also came up with the idea for the cover) and been in the group the American Breed is the opening act. He went on to a very good career as an actor and voice over artist.

Nick Jameson - I Ain't Searchin'

Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Main Street live 1977 New Orleans

The Bob Seger show was promoted by the mighty Sound Seventy. There happened to be a full page story on Sound Seventy in this week's Showcase.

Port O'Call and Sound Shop have your music needs covered with all of the CBS Records Superstars.

Karate was a real pop culture phenomenon in the Seventies.

The Talking Heads would be appearing on this Sunday night at the Exit/In. Talk about an insanely great schedule for the next few weeks!

I'm tense and nervous

Cate Bros.

Debby Boone domination of the Top 10 in 1977 is in full swing. "You Light Up My Life" was a mega hit song, inescapable and openly mocked by the more cynical people. I was just a little kid and I liked the tune. I also liked The Bee Gees, Dolly, Elvis, Heatwave, and Linda. Perhaps my favorite song on this list though is Paul Simon's "Slip Slidin' Away" which has a mysterious vibe that always entrances me.

Debby was cool

the nearer your destination

The Hobbit was coming to television. Rankin and Bass directed this pretty okay animated version of the classic Tolkien book which was must reading when I was in 3rd grade. I remember being pretty pumped up for this special and quite enjoyed it at the time. This was probably the first introduction to Tolkien for lots of people.

Film Flashback November 27, 1984

This week's film flashback to what was playing at the movies in Murfreesboro, Tennessee takes us to November 27, 1984. The Martin Four has Chuck Norris, George Burns, Peter O'Toole, Faye Dunaway, and Helen Slater top billed for three of the films, but my absolute favorite of the bunch stars Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroney, and Robert Beltran. I have to admit I didn't see any of these films at the theatre, but I did catch Night of the Comet very early in the morning on HBO a few years later and it such a blast. It had the Tempest video game, an old movie theatre, outer space stuff - the comet of course, zombies, a radio station, a shopping mall, Los Angeles, and a cute cheerleader; all of those are people, places, and things I loved as a teenager. The Belmont sisters survive the comet zombie apocalypse with a little help from Hector and a scientist played by Mary Woronov who actually has a heart unlike the other ones. It is a quintessential 80's teen film.

Supergirl introduces the big screen to Superman's cousin, Kara For-El, who has come to Earth to retrieve a powerful orb. The evil witch Selena played by Faye Dunaway stands in her way. Peter O'Toole as Zaltar helps Supergirl in this movie that bombed at the box office. I've heard that the uncut version available on DVD and Blu-ray. You can also see Oh, God! You Devil and Missing In Action at the Martin Four.

She has all the power of the universe, but she still has to learn about love.

Believe me...I'm possible

Do we run or fight? We don't have a choice now.

Daddy would have gotten us Uzi's

Across town at the Cinema_One you can see Bill Murray in a dramatic role in The Razor's Edge or check out Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming a big star in The Terminator. I've never seen The Razor's Edge, but the adaptation of the W. Somerset Maugham novel about a World War I veteran trying to discover meaning in life flopped. The public just wasn't ready to accept Bill Murray in a dramatic role. The Terminator has become a pop culture phenomenon. Arnold was great as the murderous robot, but Linda Hamilton shines as Sarah Connor. Michael Biehn is excellent also. The movie has a palpable sense of menace which is unnerving and thrilling at the same time. I did not see this one at the theatre, but memorably saw it on cable tv at my friend Glenn's house after our high school graduation. I had drove around Murfreesboro with various friend's looking for a party that was never found and somehow ended up at Glenn's. The Terminator was better than a party.

The pathway to salvation is as narrow and as difficult to walk as a razor's edge.

I'll be back

Part 49 of an ongoing series listing every movie that played at the Marbro Drive-In once located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Today's post covers July 1978 through September 1978. There is an oddity with this one in the Smokey and the Good Time Outlaws ran from July 5 - 14, but the film wasn't officially released until November 1978. The reason for this is it was a local production having been filmed in Franklin, Tennessee. Since the plot concerns making it on the Grand Ole Opry I assume there are scenes in Nashville too.
