Film Flashback September 25, 1980

John Saxon passed away recently in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. 40 years ago he was on the big screen in Murfreesboro at the Martin Twin in Battle Beyond The Stars which features Richard Thomas and George Peppard in the strangest Waltons A-Team crossover ever. I made that last part up, but this movie written by John Sayles isn't too bad. It's The Magnificent Seven set in outer space with Thomas playing a farm boy who recruits mercenaries to defend his planet.

John Saxon as Sador

The Blue Lagoon, billed as "A story of natural love" is on the other Martin Twin Screen. The story of shipwrecked children growing up on a tropical island was based on the novel of the same name  from 1908 written by Henry De Vere Stacpoole. It was made into a film three times. There's a silent version from 1923 and there is another one from 1949. I have never seen any of The Blue Lagoon movies. I'd much rather see Brooke Shields in Tilt instead. She got a Golden Raspberry award for her performance in The Blue Lagoon.

The Blue Lagoon did receive an Academy Award nomination for cinematography.

The Marbro Drive-In has a couple of horror movies for you. Prophecy is about a giant mutated bear and stars Talia Shire which makes me want Sylvester Stallone to appear as Rocky to beat up the monster. The monster has been created by a company's toxic waste and it's up to the EPA to stop it.

The first in what became a horror film franchise, Friday The 13th, is the other frightening film for your enjoyment.  It's slasher-riffic! How many campers does Jason murder in this one? Spoiler alert: if you guessed zero, you're correct.

You're doomed!

The Cinema_One countered with their own horror showing with Prom Night. If you're not back by midnight...you won't be coming home! That was the tagline for this one which featured Jamie Lee Curtis in a damsel in distress role not that dissimilar to her part in Halloween. Heck, it even involves a crazy brother. The movie was made at the height of the disco craze and it reflects it. I think this was supposed to be Jamie Lee Curtis's last scream queen role, but Terror Train was yet to come out and she would reprise her role as Laurie Strode in Halloween II before Trading Places came along. She's awesome in this movie.

I did not go to my prom.

Next week I'll be visiting 1978 with lots of movies to see and Murfreesboro's "Greater Value Days" happening too. Hope to see you then.
