August 19, 1984 was a Sunday so for today's journey into the past I'm doing a Sunday Showcase review. We never subscribed to the Tennessean, but every now and then my father would pick up the Sunday edition and it was always a big treat for me. The sports pages, the comics, and the Sunday Showcase were the best.
Local Nashville cable outlet Viacom was promoting their complete live coverage of the Republican National Convention. That convention was held in Dallas. The Democratic National Convention had been held a month before in San Francisco so I'm including the ad for that one too. The elephant and donkey at their respective podiums is funny.

Ray Parker Jr. is on top of the charts with his homage to Huey Lewis and the News's "I Want a New Drug" with "Ghostbusters" sliming them all. This Top Ten is loaded with monster smash hits.
What better way to listen to the Top Ten than with a fully cranked up car stereo system.
Once upon a time Jay Leno was just a standup comedian playing clubs.

Vanderbilt Concerts outdid themselves for September 1984 with Elvis Costello and the Attractions with the Stray Cats and Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit on September 1 and then Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble coming to Memorial Gym on the 13th. I never could find out who the special guests opening act was for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, but I did find a review of the show which I'll add as a bonus. I got to see Stevie and B.B. King a few years after this and it was fantastic.

Channel 17 was going to have a Honeymooners marathon on the upcoming Monday.
Anybody remember when Arby's made charbroiled hamburgers? I sure don't.
Bonus Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble concert review. You can click on the photo to make it bigger or right click and open the image only and blow it up.
Bonus material from the Daily News Journal Sunday paper. They had a section directed at the incoming flux of college students and this little piece on Murfreesboro's activities is full of long gone, but not forgotten places.
